Fire-Wise Design-Build for the City in the Country
Who designs and builds landscapes in Poway?
Modern Yardz designs and builds complete landscapes in Poway - fire-wise planting and defensible space, drought-tolerant gardens, smart irrigation, patios and pavers, retaining walls, artificial turf, and lighting - as one design-build project. We are a California-licensed firm (CSLB #1082881, founded 2018, 2,900+ completed projects) that shows you the finished landscape in a 3D rendering with a line-item cost before work begins.
Why Choose Modern Yardz
for Landscape Design
Poway calls itself the City in the Country, and its landscapes reflect that: larger lots, hillsides, mature trees, and open space at the back fence. That open space is also the main design constraint. The City says more than 90 percent of Poway's geography is designated a Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and residents still remember evacuations during the 2003 Cedar Fire and the 2007 Witch Creek Fire. In Poway, a beautiful landscape and a fire-wise landscape have to be the same landscape.
That shapes every plan we draw. Under the City's Wildfire Defensible Space Program, owners must manage highly flammable chaparral within 100 feet of a structure, and in Very High zones, existing homes must meet defensible space requirements for Zones 1 and 2 - with Zone 0, the ember-resistant strip right next to the house, scheduled to take effect in January 2030. Modern Yardz designs that layering now: hardscape, gravel, and non-combustible materials against the house, well-spaced and irrigated planting in the next zone, and managed, thinned planting beyond.
Poway summers are hot and dry once you are inland, so plant choice and irrigation matter as much as fire spacing. We design drought-tolerant and Mediterranean palettes, hydrozone the irrigation, specify weather-based smart controllers, and build to California's MWELO standards - while still delivering lawns, shade, outdoor rooms, and the estate feel Poway lots deserve.
Every project starts with a 3D rendering and a line-item cost before any work begins. Founded in 2018, Modern Yardz has completed 2,900+ San Diego County projects, including estates in nearby Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Santa Fe, and holds a 5.0 rating across 104 Google reviews. Defensible Space Design
Landscapes laid out in fire zones: an ember-resistant hardscape and gravel strip at the house, spaced and irrigated planting next, and managed vegetation toward the open space.
Estate-Scale Planting
Drought-tolerant, Mediterranean, and native palettes sized for larger Poway lots - olives, oaks, salvias, and grasses that look established and handle inland heat.
Smart Irrigation
Drip and low-flow zones grouped by plant need, weather-based controllers, and MWELO-compliant design that keeps fire-zone planting hydrated without waste.
Hardscape & Outdoor Rooms
Paver and stone patios, walkways, and fire-safe outdoor living spaces with shade structures for hot afternoons.
Slopes, Walls & Drainage
Engineered retaining walls, terracing, and drainage that tame hillside lots and erosion - with permits handled for walls over 4 feet.
Turf & Lighting
Artificial turf where you want green without the water, and low-voltage LED lighting for paths, trees, and evening living.

See it in 3D before we build it
Every landscape design project starts as a photo-realistic 3D model, so you can walk through the finished space and change it before anything is poured or planted. This is one of those walkthroughs.

Landscape Design FAQ
Across San Diego County, our landscape projects range from about $25,000 for focused upgrades such as turf, lighting, and planting to $300,000+ for complete property transformations, with most projects running $50,000 to $150,000. Larger Poway lots and hillside work can sit higher. The design fee is typically included, and your 3D design comes with a line-item cost.
Very likely. The City of Poway says more than 90 percent of its geography is designated a Fire Hazard Severity Zone, with zones adopted locally in 2025 from the state's mapping. The City's fire-zone map shows the designation for your parcel, and we design to the requirements that apply.
It means arranging the landscape in zones around the house. In Poway, owners must manage highly flammable chaparral within 100 feet of a structure, and homes in Very High zones must meet Zone 1 and 2 defensible-space requirements, with Zone 0 - the ember-resistant area right next to the home - taking effect in January 2030. We design hardscape and gravel near the house, spaced and irrigated planting next, and managed vegetation beyond.
Yes. Fire-wise design is about spacing, moisture, and materials, not bare dirt. Well-irrigated, low-growing, and fire-resistant plants, green turf panels, stone patios, and carefully placed trees can create a landscape that feels full and inviting while keeping fuel away from the house.
Plants built for hot, dry inland summers: Mediterranean shrubs like rosemary, lavender, and olive; salvias and other California natives; succulents and agaves; and ornamental grasses. Near the house and in fire zones, we favor lower-growing, high-moisture, and fire-resistant species.
Yes. We use engineered retaining walls, terracing, and drainage to create level outdoor rooms and control erosion, and walls over 4 feet are permitted and engineered. On slopes facing open space, we also plan fire-wise planting and access for maintaining vegetation.
Turf-replacement rebates, about $2 per square foot through SoCal WaterSmart and more in unincorporated county areas, are often available through regional and local water programs, though eligibility, caps, and pre-approval rules change. We confirm current programs for your address and prepare the documentation.
