Luxury Pavers & Stone Patios

Travertine, Porcelain & Natural Stone

Quick Answer

Who installs luxury pavers in La Jolla?

Modern Yardz designs and installs luxury pavers in La Jolla - travertine, porcelain, limestone, and other natural stone for patios, pool decks, view terraces, entries, and motor courts - from the Village and Bird Rock to the Muirlands, La Jolla Farms, and Mount Soledad. As a California-licensed design-build firm (CSLB #1082881, founded 2018, 2,900+ completed projects), we choose materials for salt air, engineer for slopes and soils, navigate coastal permitting, and show you the design in 3D with a line-item cost before work begins.

Overview

Why Choose Modern Yardz
for Luxury Paver

In La Jolla, salt picks your paving materials for you. Ocean spray and fog settle on every surface near Windansea, the Cove, and Bird Rock, and over time they stain porous stone, break down weak sealers, and corrode cheap edging and fasteners. Modern Yardz specifies paving that lives with it - low-porosity porcelain, dense travertine and limestone, and quality concrete pavers - with coastal-rated sealers and details that keep salt from becoming a maintenance project.

The ground and the rules matter as much as the stone. Grade is the norm on Mount Soledad, in the Muirlands, and along canyon rims, so many La Jolla patios are terraces held up by engineered walls. Soils change from fast-draining sand near the shore to expansive clay further inland, which changes how deep and how carefully a base must be built. And nearly all of La Jolla sits in the Coastal Overlay Zone, where grading, retaining walls, and major hardscape can trigger a Coastal Development Permit - with projects near the beach or a bluff potentially appealable to the Coastal Commission. We plan for all of it before the first paver is cut.

Every project starts with a 3D rendering and a line-item cost before any work begins, so you can see how the stone reads against your home and, just as important, against the view. As a licensed design-build firm (CSLB #1082881), one team handles design, engineering, permitting, installation, and finishing.

Founded in 2018, Modern Yardz has completed 2,900+ San Diego County projects, including La Jolla pools, spas, and terraces, and holds a 5.0 rating across 104 Google reviews. Call 619-775-9554 for a free design consultation.

Travertine & Limestone

Dense, honed or tumbled natural stone for pool decks and terraces - comfortable underfoot in the sun and the classic choice for La Jolla's Mediterranean and contemporary homes, sealed for coastal exposure.

Large-Format Porcelain

Low-porosity porcelain in stone and concrete looks that resists salt staining and sunscreen, with slip-rated outdoor finishes - a clean, modern surface for view terraces and indoor-outdoor living.

Terraced View Patios

Multi-level paver terraces for sloped lots on Mount Soledad and in the Muirlands, built with engineered retaining walls, subdrains, and steps that keep every level stable and flat.

Pool Decks & Coping

Stone and porcelain pool decks with matching coping, drainage, and slip resistance, detailed so the deck, pool edge, and view read as one surface.

Entries, Courtyards & Motor Courts

Front courtyards, walkways, and vehicle-rated motor courts that set the tone from the street, with borders and banding tailored to the architecture.

Coastal-Grade Details

Corrosion-resistant edging and hardware, coastal-rated sealers, and drainage that keeps salt water and runoff moving - the details that keep paving looking new near the ocean.

Common Questions

Luxury Paver FAQ

Across San Diego County, our installed paver projects typically run $15 to $45+ per square foot: interlocking concrete about $15 to $25, porcelain about $20 to $35, and natural stone and travertine about $25 to $40 per square foot, including site preparation, base, installation, and joint stabilization. Terraced hillside work, engineering, and coastal permitting are priced on top. Your 3D design comes with a line-item cost.

Possibly. Nearly all of La Jolla is in the City of San Diego's Coastal Overlay Zone, where grading, retaining walls, pools, and major hardscape can trigger a Coastal Development Permit, and projects within roughly 300 feet of the beach or a coastal bluff may be appealable to the California Coastal Commission. A simple at-grade patio may not need one. We check your parcel and manage the process.

Low-porosity porcelain is the easiest to keep clean in salt and fog. Dense travertine and limestone perform well with a coastal-rated sealer and occasional rinsing, and quality concrete pavers are durable and economical. Just as important are corrosion-resistant edging and hardware and good drainage, so salt water does not sit on or under the surface.

Yes. Most hillside patios are terraces supported by engineered retaining walls with subdrains behind them. Steep-slope work over 25 percent falls under Environmentally Sensitive Lands review, so we plan grading, walls, and drainage carefully, often with geotechnical input, and turn unusable slope into level, view-facing outdoor rooms.

Travertine gives a warm, natural look and stays comfortable underfoot; it is porous, so it needs sealing near the coast. Porcelain is denser, more stain-resistant, and nearly maintenance-free, with slip-rated outdoor finishes. Both work beautifully in La Jolla - we show them side by side in your 3D design with the cost of each.

Properly installed pavers and stone last 25 to 50+ years in San Diego's climate, and natural stone can last indefinitely with care. Near the ocean, rinse occasionally, refresh joint sand every 3 to 5 years, and reseal sealed surfaces every 2 to 3 years.

A flat courtyard or patio is relatively quick to build; terraced view patios, pool decks with new coping, and anything needing a coastal permit take longer, and permitting often sets the overall timeline. We start engineering and permitting early and give you a schedule with your design.
