We are a California-licensed design-build firm (CSLB #1082881, founded 2018, 2,900+ completed projects) that uses corrosion-resistant brass and copper fixtures and designs for low glare and view protection.

Overview

Why Choose Modern Yardz
for Landscape Lighting

Del Mar is a town where neighbors watch each other's views, and that applies after dark too. The city's Design Review weighs how new exterior work affects neighbors, with heavy emphasis on protecting ocean views, and a bright, glaring lighting scheme can feel just as intrusive as a tall wall. Modern Yardz designs Del Mar lighting to be felt more than seen: shielded fixtures, warm color, low aiming angles, and light kept on your own garden and architecture.

The other constant is salt. Del Mar sits fully exposed between two lagoons, under a heavy marine layer and steady salt air, and ordinary fixtures pit, corrode, and fail within a few seasons. We specify corrosion-resistant, commercial-grade brass and copper fixtures, sealed connections, and direct-burial cable, so the system keeps working and the hardware ages to a natural patina.

Del Mar living runs on relaxed evenings - dinner outside, a fire lounge, sunset on the terrace - so we light the outdoor rooms people actually use: step and path lighting on hillside lots, palm and planting accents that come alive when the marine layer rolls in, and warm task lighting at outdoor kitchens and dining areas. Smart transformers give you scenes, zone dimming, and sunset-tracking timers from your phone.

Every project starts with an evening design walk and a fixture-by-fixture quote. Founded in 2018, Modern Yardz has completed 2,900+ San Diego County projects, including Del Mar pools, outdoor kitchens, and illuminated front-yard planting, and holds a 5.0 rating across 104 Google reviews. Every landscape lighting project starts as a photo-realistic 3D model, so you can walk through the finished space and change it before anything is poured or planted. This is one of those walkthroughs.

A front yard rebuilt around stone-faced retaining walls and raised planters, with a slatted privacy gate, paver drive and uplighting through the planting.

Common Questions

Landscape Lighting FAQ

Most residential landscape lighting systems in San Diego range from $3,500 to $15,000: a front-yard starter system with 10 to 15 fixtures about $3,500 to $6,000, a full-property system with 25 to 40 fixtures and Wi-Fi controls about $7,500 to $12,000, and estate systems with 50+ fixtures $12,000 to $25,000+. We quote fixture by fixture after the evening design walk.

Not when it is designed for Del Mar. We use shielded fixtures, warm color temperatures, and careful aiming so light stays on your garden and home rather than spilling into neighbors' windows or views. Low-glare lighting also keeps your own view clear from inside.

Solid brass and copper. Plastic and powder-coated aluminum corrode in salt air and often fail in 3 to 5 years. We specify commercial-grade fixtures from manufacturers such as Kichler, FX Luminaire, Vista Professional, Coastal Source, and Unique Lighting, and seal every connection.

Yes. Recessed step lights, low path lights, and wall-mounted fixtures give even, safe light on stairs and landings without glare - often the most important part of a hillside lighting plan.

Yes. We micro-trench along beds, route cable under mulch and gravel, and tuck fixtures into existing planting, so the landscape stays intact. Hardscape is cut only when necessary and repaired to match.

A properly specified system lasts 20+ years: brass and copper fixtures do not fail structurally, LEDs run 40,000 to 50,000 hours, and direct-burial cable lasts indefinitely. Transformers are the most common replacement, after 10 to 15 years. Systems include a manufacturer fixture warranty plus our in-house workmanship guarantee.

Very little: a seasonal aim check, wiping salt spray off lenses near the coast, and a transformer inspection every few years. We offer an optional annual tune-up.
